South Dakota 125th: How your hometown can be a Statehood Celebration Community

Posted: Updated:

Tonight we continue our nearly year-long coverage of South Dakota's 125th year of statehood.

Today, Governor Daugaard announced communities statewide are being urged to develop their own community based celebration to honor the state's upcoming 125th anniversary in November. "It's a great time to look back and reflect upon all the things that have happened in South Dakota since statehood. But its also a great time to look back at those days and reflect and remember our history."

Daugaard also told us a celebration like this provides an opportunity to review how deep a family's roots run in South Dakota. We asked the Governor about his family's roots here. "My family came a little over 100 years ago. They immigrated from Denmark and my grandfather and grandmother bought a little farm near Dell Rapids in 1911. And so it's been a little over 100 years since the Daugaards have been here."
