New cane ball courts diversifying Huron

Posted: Updated:

Cane ball, a game similar to volleyball and soccer, is growing popular in the city of Huron, and a group of students are doing something about it. Middle schoolers, originally from Thailand and Burma, are so in love with the game, for their Destination Imagination (D.I.) project they petitioned to get some courts set up in town.

"This group in particular has a really unique project because they could bring something new to our community. They also had to overcome the language barrier," team manager, and middle school teacher, Wendy Voss said.

Overcoming the language barrier is what they did. They were very successful when presenting their project on cane ball.

"We created a model, and we created a chinlone model. Then we went to state, and we got first place, and now we get to go to Tennessee," team member, Tree Paw, said.

Chinlone is what the sport is called in Burma and Thailand. The team has less than a month until the D.I. Global Finals, giving little time for fundraising.

"We've had two weeks now, we almost have reached our goal we are at close to $12,000," Voss said.

The students have had nothing but positive outcomes with this project.

"They've become amazing public speakers now and overcome a lot of shyness," Voss said.

The city liked their idea so much, they will be putting in two cane ball courts for the diverse community of Huron. The students still need $3,000 and could use your help.
