Some parents are picking up where the legislature left off -- starting a petition to get the Sioux Falls School District's school start date changed.
KSFY News spoke with the woman behind the petition.
She wants school to start after Labor Day, but she says the school board signed off on a calendar for the next three years, that has school starting in the middle of August.
Wendy McDonnel said she has been wanting the change for about five years now.
She thinks kid's summers should be longer because it gives families more time together.
So far, she has handed out about 30 petitions.
She needs about 5,000 signatures within the next 20 days to get it on the ballot for a vote.
And it is not only to parents who are interested, some businesses agree it makes sense to have a later start date.
They say summer is a good time for them to make money.
But more than anything, it is about being heard.
"It accomplishes parents having a voice. I don't know that we felt like we've had one and so this allows us to have one. Good or bad it allows people to go into that booth and have a vote," said McDonnel.
She added there are many other states that start after Labor Day and thinks it is appropriate to have Sioux Falls to do the same.
School Board President Doug Morrison said they have every right as citizens to get something on the ballot.
But the calendars they are putting out are consistent with what they have done in the past.
