SD family recognized for conservation efforts

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has recognized a South Dakota family for its conservation efforts.
Lyle and Garnet Perman, their son Luke and his wife Naomi are the state's recipients of the Leopold Conservation Award. The award comes from the national Sand County Foundation and the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association and Grassland Coalition.
The family manages 7,500 acres and the Rock Hills Ranch in north-central South Dakota.
Earth Day will be commemorated Tuesday. Daugaard says it is a day to remember the "intrinsic value" of clean air, clear water and abundant wildlife.
Daugaard says 80 percent of the state's land is privately owned, and it's up to residents to care for it.
Daugaard says the family's efforts are good for business and the land itself.
