ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Demolition has begun on an old freight depot in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen American News reports that workers last week began removing the west end of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad Depot, which also is referred to as the freight portion of the building.

The primary depot structure will be renovated.

City planner Ken Hubbart says the Aberdeen City Council approved demolition plans for the project last year.

The state's Historic Preservation Office originally rejected the demolition plans, but property owner Doug Braa appealed that decision.

Hubbart says demolition of the freight portion of the building was needed to allow for additional parking.

The depot was built in 1907 and has been on the National and State Registers of Historic Places since 1976.

KSFY's Kamie Roesler is looking into the demolition and will have more tonight on KSFY News.
