Consumer choice driving South Dakota study on wine imports

Posted: Updated:
Some South Dakota wine connoisseurs wish it was easier to import their favorite vintages. But existing state law doesn't allow wineries to ship directly to consumers here.

Lawmakers have tried to address the complaints, but those bills failed this session.

South Dakota is one of nine states that doesn't allow direct wine shipping.

This week a legislative board approved a summer study on alcohol distribution and sale. The study will likely result in proposed policy changes.

Supporters of the study and direct shipping laws say current laws are "archaic." They say consumers should be able to buy wines that aren't available at stores.

One legislator opposes the study and says that the state shouldn't get involved just so a few can more easily access their favorite bottle of wine.
