People in central South Dakota have disposed of a record-setting amount of unnecessary medications during an event in Pierre.
The Pierre Police Department said 79 pounds of old and unneeded drugs were dropped off Saturday during a local "Take Back Day" event.
Pelle says 79 residents dropped off medications. The event was part of a national initiative that allows people to turn in prescription and over-the-counter medications that are no longer used or have expired.
Pelle says this was the department's single largest take-back event. Before Saturday, the department had collected more than 200 pounds of medications during seven events.
