South Dakota's Civil Air Patrol receives highly successful evaluation

Posted: Updated:

South Dakota’s Civil Air Patrol received a highly successful rating after holding a major operation exercise in Sioux Falls Saturday.

Members of the U.S. Air Force were in the area all week, evaluating the Civil Air Patrol’s ability to respond in a wide variety of emergency service missions.

The Civil Air Patrol Wing serves as the state’s eye in the sky during natural disasters like the massive winter snow fall Western South Dakota received last October.

“We were able to quickly fly every corner of the state to figure out how much damage had happened, submit those numbers in a roll up to get a presidential declaration that resulted in million and millions of dollars of federal relief in a rapid manner,” said Lt. Col.. Rick Larson, the Civil Air Patrol’s Incident Commander.

Saturday’s aviation exercises were the last of the week long evaluation. Lt. Col Larson says South Dakota’s Civil Air Patrol received highly successful marks in the evaluation-a rating rarely attained by Civil Air Patrol wings.
