Worthington care center picking up pieces after murder suicide

Posted: Updated:
Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN is still trying to pick up the pieces after Friday night's murder suicide.

87-year-old George Doust was found on a bed with a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

And his wife, 86-year-old Doris Doust was found with a gun shot wound to her head.

Police found a handgun in the room.

Administrator for Crossroads Car Center, Barbara Atchison, said they were still trying to process what happened.

Doris had only been living at Crossroads for about two weeks.

And her husband, George, visited her every day.

Atchison said that is why this is such a shock, because he seemed to be so devoted to his wife.

He still lived at home, but spent most of the time during the day at crossroads.

Atchinson said George was popular with the staff and was very friendly and upbeat.

She added because of Doris's illness, George talked with the staff more than she did and there was absolutely no indication of why he did what he did.

She said he was there earlier that day and his behavior was not unusual.

Atchinson said it was a very isolated incident, that could not be foreseen or prevented.

But even so, she says it is still a troubling and tragic situation.

"We look back and we think did anything change during that two week period and honestly no. Both of them were very nice people and he enjoyed visiting with the staff and they, likewise, enjoyed visiting with him," said Atchison.

Atchinson adds she has been in the business for over 30 years and has never seen anything like this.

She said they will be reviewing their policies and they will have more training about increased awareness.

Crossroads Care Center will also be providing professional counseling for the staff and the residents if they want it.
