Group files to petition to block indoor pool at Spellerberg Park

Posted: Updated:

A newly formed citizens group filed a petition with the city to block construction of an indoor pool at Spellerberg Park.

The Public Pool Partners group needs to collect more than 5,000 signatures to get the proposed initiated measure approved for public vote.

The group says this petition is necessary because there is a lot of confusion over the April 8 municipal election results.

“A significant number of voters report that, while they support the idea of a municipal indoor pool for Sioux Falls, they had no intention of their vote being synonymous with a large indoor aquatic center being constructed at Spellerberg Park,” Public Pool Partners spokesperson John Matthius said in a news release.

In the April 8 election, voters decided they didn’t want a new outdoor pool at Spellerberg Park.

The City Council is planning to discuss an ordinance to allocate money for the indoor pool – at Spellerberg Park – tonight. Public Pool Partners doesn’t think this central Sioux Falls park is the right place for a large indoor facility, though. The group’s petition would clear Spellerberg Park as an option for the indoor pool.

The City Council can move forward with pool plans, tonight, however. The group needs to collect signatures to put the proposed measure before voters.
