Sioux Falls standoff ends with second man in custody

Posted: Updated:
Sioux Falls police say a standoff that continued for nearly eight hours started with a tip for a man wanted on felony drug charges.
Wednesday, law enforcement received information that a subject wanted on felony drug charges was located at an address on South Jefferson Avenue. They also had information that he was armed and had made threats to law enforcement.
As officers of the Sioux Falls Area Warrant Task Force were watching the home, the individual fled in a northeasterly direction.  He was seen entering a residence at 513 S. Western Avenue.  Police quickly surrounded the home.  Given the subject's threats and the information that he was armed the Emergency Response Teams of the Sioux Falls Police Department were activated.
At 1:50 AM, after a nearly 8 hour standoff with police, the individual surrendered to law enforcement without further incident.
Derek Jordan Arapahoe, 25, of Sioux Falls was arrested for the felony warrants.  At the time of this release, further evidence is being gathered and additional charges may be possible.

A standoff in Sioux Falls that stretched more than seven hours ended around 1:45 Thursday morning with a second person in custody.
Sioux Falls Police along with SWAT team members spent Wednesday night involved in a standoff at a home in the 500 block of south Western Avenue, which is near 13th and Western. It started around 6:30 p.m.
A KSFY News crew on scene saw one man arrested before 8:00.  A second man was led away by police in handcuffs around 1:45 Thursday morning.
Several streets in the area of 13th and Western and 13th and Willow had been closed off to traffic. Neighbors in surrounding homes that had been evacuated were being allowed back into their homes.
The Red Cross was on scene throughout the evening helping displaced neighbors with blankets.
At one point overnight, SWAT officers broke out windows in the residence, and threw in what's described as "flash bangs." Those are non-lethal explosive devices used to temporarily disorient someone.
