State Theatre turning attention to auditorium

Posted: Updated:
With reconstruction of the lobby of the historic State Theatre in Sioux Falls essentially complete, crews are turning their attention to the auditorium.

State Theatre executive director Stephen Williamson says the goal is to bring cinema back to downtown Sioux Falls.

The circa-1926 facility is being restored to the crimson-and-gold Beaux-Arts look from the era but will boast a high-definition, digital projection system surrounded by thundering high-fidelity sound.

The former vaudeville and silent movie house has been closed since about 1990.

Officials hope to open the main level to seat about 400 people by early next year. Work will then turn to the 350-seat balcony.

Williamson says the theater's renovation has taken longer than first envisioned as its historic site status requires crews to be meticulous.
