26th Avera Race kicks off Saturday morning

Posted: Updated:

Saturday is a big day in Sioux Falls: the 26th annual Avera Race Against Breast Cancer. This year's theme is "Ignite the Fight"! The event brings together friends, family, cancer survivors, and strangers together every year for a common cause. All money raised at this event stays local to help with cancer treatment and support.

Have you registered? If not, there's still time! Check out the "Avera Race" tab on our homepage.

Here are a couple reminders ahead of race day:

Complimentary shuttle rides will run every 15 minutes from the parking lots at Embrace Church and Sioux Falls Christian Schools. The drop off and pick up will be at Shalom Christian Reformed Church on the corner of 49th Street and Southeastern Avenue. Shuttles will run before and after the race. Shuttles are scheduled to run every 15 minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The last shuttle bus pre-race will run at 7:15 am. Organizers say you should really think about taking a shuttle or carpooling for the event.

Survivor parking is available in the Avera McKennan Fitness Center and Shalom Christian Reformed Church parking lots but space is limited. To get in you will need to wear your pink shirt included in your race packet.

Participant parking is available at the Lyon Park and surrounding residential areas. Organizers say plan to arrive 30 to 60 minutes early to allow time for parking. Avoid parking in city 'No Parking' zones as violators may be ticketed.

Southeastern Avenue from 49th Street to 26th Street will be shut down at 7:00am for the race. Streets surrounding the Avera McKennan Fitness Center will be shut down at 7:30am.

The race day schedule is as follows:

6:00-7:15 am- Shuttle buses running

7:15 am- Survivor Group Photo

7:40 am - Song tribute to all Survivors

7:45 am- Warm Up with Jackie Haggar-Tuschen

8:00 am- Avera Race Expo, Breakfast Buffet, and Survivor Pavilion Open

8:00 am- The Race Begins with the Survivor Start! (Please note that race starts will be staggered and chip timed)

8:00 am - 10K race begins

8:10 am - 5K race begins

8:20 am - 1.5 and 3 mile walks begin

8:30 am - Survivor Pavilion door prizes

You can also download a free smart phone app. It includes race information including event times, and course maps. Just search Avera Race Against Breast Cancer in your Google Play or Apple Store.

The first 7,000 registrants will receive a nylon backpack and other giveaways. Registered adults will receive a black long-sleeved, dry-fit Avera Race t-shirt. Registered children will receive a black long-sleeved, 100% cotton Avera Race t-shirt.

All cancer survivors will receive a complimentary survivor long-sleeved t-shirt.

Digital Screening Mammograms will be available 6:00-11:00a.m. at Avera's digital mobile mammography truck on Race day. Breast health materials, scheduling information and tours will be available as well! Please call 322-PINK (7465) to schedule your digital mammogram for the day of the race or to schedule at an Avera Breast Center location.

Organizers say due to recent events they are asking all participants and spectators to leave backpacks at home unless they are medically necessary. All backpacks may be subject to search.
