South Dakota first lady makes 250th stop on reading tour

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota's first lady will make her 250th stop on a book tour she began three years ago.

Linda Daugaard will read to third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at Beresford Elementary School Friday.

She says that reading is important for child development and learning. She hopes to inspire children to read for fun.

The first lady has worked as a school librarian and taught at St. Mary's High School in Dell Rapids. She has served on multiple library boards, including the Minnehaha County Rural Library Board.

During her reading tour she collects and redistributes chapter books. She also supports the Social Services Department's "Reach Out and Read" program, which provides books to children under the age of five.
