Grandmother Says Heroes Are Angels

Posted: Updated:
A bittersweet morning in Mitchell as three young heroes were recognized for bravery.
They stopped at an accident scene....when others might not have.
And what they did that day...saved a little girl from what would likely have been certain death.
It was a day for smiles and pictures, hugs and tears.
It was a day of thankfulness because of what happened on this day..nearly 8 months ago.
"I knew immediately something bad had happened. We all did. We were just speechless. We didn't know what to do." Brandon Sandoz was traveling on Highway 37 south of Mitchell last September 25th with his friends Corey Ramold and Abby Albin, when they saw something....they did not expect to see.
"Two cars collided in front of us. And we just got out and started helping out."Corey and Brandon ran towards the two cars, both were on fire.
 The drivers were dead.
But Brandon saw something in one of the burning cars...a 2 year old girl."I grabbed her and took the restraints off her and pulled her out of the door, pulled her through the window cause the door wouldn't open."
Brandon handed that little girl, named Lauren...to his friend Abby. "You just don't think when you're on adrenaline. You just act."
Together, these three friends saved a little girl's life.
Had they done nothing, little lauren would have likely died.
While Cheri Claggett lost her daughter Sara in the accident, her granddaughter Lauren survived. She doesn't believe it's a coincidence that Corey, Brandon and Abby were there when the accident happened. "There are people who have asked them why you stopped. And they just did. And I'm so thankful that they did. Or else Lauren would not be here today."
Lauren is healthy and happy...and her three guardian angels received Meritorious Service Awards from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Ask Lauren's grandmother about three heroes....and she will tell you...they really are angels. "God had those kids there for a reason to help Lauren. There's a plan for Lauren and I can't wait to see what He has for her."
 This day was bittersweet.
As heroes were recognized, the lives of those lost....Sara Claggett and Donald Geidel...were remembered.
Also honored: a farmer named Jacob Hohn who helped Abby, Brandon and Corey separate the two vehicles and tried to help the drivers who died.
