17-year-old hacked into Sioux Falls Catholic Schools computer

Posted: Updated:

Last Thursday a 17-year-old student hacked into Sioux Falls Catholic Schools computer and phone system.

The high school, junior high, six elementary schools and their central office didn't have internet or phone for an entire school day.

The superintendent said they have already taken steps so it doesn't happen again.

They had IT in looking for a fix and it was about mid-afternoon when they discovered it was hacking and called in specialists.

Dr. Lorang said he was disappointed when he learned someone hacked their system.

But he doesn't think it will happen again because of the precautions they're taking.

He added this isn't a one time fix, but something they'll be working on periodically so their day isn't disrupted again.

"Our plans now are to meet with some security experts and we will do an internal vulnerability scans on a periodic basis and we'll also do an external penetration test that we will also do basically a security audit. We've talked with the people who are experts in this area they say we should do it on an on going basis," Dr. Lorang said.

Dr. Lorang said they spoke with parents that day to tell them what was going on.

And as soon as the school has more information, they'll be sending it out as well.
