City Council votes to help fund indoor pool at Spellerberg Park

Posted: Updated:

The Sioux Falls City Council voted 7 to 1 help fund an indoor pool at Spellerberg, but lots of people were at the meeting tonight to give their opinion on where it should go.

Testimony lasted almost an hour and a half - as dozens of people took their turn at the podium.

It was about 50-50 for people supporting Spellerberg Park and people opposing Spellerberg.

Most people against Spellerberg wanted City Council to delay the vote until other places could be looked at for the pool.

Namely

the Sanford Sports Complex.

Even though Sanford released a statement saying their study was not intended for a general, recreational use indoor pool.

Mike Begeman works with Sanford and was at the meeting tonight.

He said they fully support the Spellerberg site.

"This is a recreational facility that is going to be used mainly for recreational purposes and that's really not the intent of our facility at the Sanford Complex anyway. We were looking more at a more competitive type of facility at some point down the road," said Begeman.

He added this was a very emotional topic for people on both sides and said Sanford wants to support the community and appreciates being involved.

The city's next step is to find a contractor to get the project moving for an indoor pool at Spellerberg Park.

Council member Dean Karsky said it will be at least nine months before they'll be able to break ground.
