Stranded passengers at Sioux Falls Regional Airport

Posted: Updated:
About 700 flights were canceled yesterday at Chicago airports after an electrical problem forced officials to temporarily halt all air traffic.

Many passengers at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport have since been stranded because of delayed and canceled flights into Chicago.

"It's been a nightmare," said Christine Van Bemmel, stranded passenger.

This nightmare started Monday night. Van Bemmel and her travel companion Molly were set to fly out of Sioux Falls to their connecting flight to Denver. However, bad weather struck and plans changed.
"So they advised me to take a flight the next day going through Chicago. Well, then there was the fire in the air control tower so my flight got cacancelednd I sat in the airport for eight hours -- three hours in line trying to get my flight rebooked and then I came today and my flight is delayed an hour and a half. I wanted to cry. I'm so sick of being here. I need to get home to go back to work," said Van Bemmel.

And she's no stranger to this airport anymore.
"Actually it's really funny because I recognize the people at the front desk. I'm like you helped me yesterday and you helped me the day before," said Van Bemmel.

But it's not just Van Bemmel who has endured the countless hours just waiting, watching the time going by.
"So we just sit there and whine. There's not much you can do. You just have to wait, wait it out," said Van Bemmel.

Whether today's the day she and her pooch make it home to Boise -- she says your guess is as good as mine.
"Best case scenario is we land in Denver and I run across the airport and make my connection and then I would be in Boise by 5. Otherwise, I won't be able to fly out until 10," said Van Bemmel.

Van Bemmel made it to Denver by 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. The flight to Boise was delayed so she did not miss her connecting flight. It looks like she will be making it home Wednesday night after a long few days.
