Help Wanted: businesses ramp up hiring students during summer break

Posted: Updated:
Thursday has been circled in red on many families' calendars.

It's the last day of classes for Sioux Falls public schools and other districts in the area.

The end of the school year means it's hiring season for many businesses.

Teenagers who take part-time jobs during the summer help some businesses out in more ways than one.

The sign posted on the window of a store might open the door to a new job for many teenagers looking to make some extra cash.

And at the Empire Hy-Vee, the store could use some extra help to fill its open positions.

The students who take part-time jobs while on school break keep things moving along during the summer.

Harrisburg High School sophomore and now junior, Cody Van Wyk said "I bag groceries, I check groceries, I stock the shelves and do almost everything they need me to do."

Fellow Harrisburg High School student Kennedy Cumberland said "I'm planning on working at Hy-Vee, the Empire Hy-Vee on Louise, working in the dish room. I'm going to get promoted, stepped up pretty soon, so then I'm probably just going to be saving up for a new car."

Empire Hy-Vee store director Bob Trader said "we are a very popular place for students to work, they get to work with their friends, and they're very familiar with what goes on in the store."

"We do tend to hire a little bit stronger going into the summer season with our part-time help because we do, this location in particular has over 500 weeks of vacation to take care of for our full-time employees in the summertime, so there would be hundreds of weeks of vacation at each of our stores in town."

Trader said having the extra part-time help during the summer gives the full-timers the opportunity to take time off when most of their families have off.  Otherwise, they might have to spread their vacations out and take time off in the winter.
