Parents spending more and more on baby-sitting

Posted: Updated:
Getting a baby-sitter is expensive these days, and a new survey indicates the cost really can vary based on where you live.

UrbanSitter polled more than 7,000 families across the country, and the data reveals some interesting costs and habits about American parents. On average, the national hourly rate for one hour of baby sitting, for one child, is $14.97, and that ticks up slightly for each additional child.

The most expensive city for parents, no surprises here, is New York City, where sitters rake in $15.34 an hour on average. Denver, Colo., is the least expensive city, at just $10.84 an hour.

These costs can really add up. The study found nearly half of parents are spending at least $1,000 a year on baby sitting.

And of course, there's also the debate about whether to tip your baby sitter or not. Seventy percent of parents said they do.

What do you think? Is $14.97 an hour too much? Join the conversation.
