Road construction season continues in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:
Two major road construction projects in Sioux Falls are set to expand next week.

Work on West Maple Street in the northwest part of town begins Monday.

And starting Wednesday, Sertoma Avenue will close north of 41st Street.

There's a lot of activity at 41st and Sertoma but it's not just the cars.

These days the only traffic on 41st street West of Sertoma is these yellow construction vehicles.

Right now, 41st Street is a rocky road, all that remains are chunks of black asphalt and lots and lots of dirt.

The signs of the construction season in South Dakota are everywhere, 'road closed, 'detour' and an array of orange posts lead the way.

KSFY News spoke with Josh Peterson, the city's principal engineer, to find out why this stretch of road is getting a makeover.

"We're seeing traffic increase as development moves on the west side of town and grows. We needed to add some lanes on 41st Street to accommodate that and specifically at the intersection of 41st Street and Sertoma. It's getting more and more traffic, so we're adding turn lanes to help traffic flow better through that intersection. We'll also be making some improvements out at the Ellis intersection as well," Peterson said.

"We ask for some patience from the traveling public. Leaving a little bit early will always help you account for any delays you might have with construction.  If you ever have any questions, just look on our website or give us a call," Peterson added.

That's good advice this time of year to make sure you give yourself some extra time, wherever you need to go.

Construction on 41st Street between Sertoma Avenue and Ellis Road is expected to last until November.
