South Dakotans march with Madison Scouts

Posted: Updated:
Jacob Fenner's brass skills are so good he was selected to the Madison Scouts, which is the founding member of Drum Corp International.

"What this is is drum and bugle corp which is professional marching band. So, this is like the best of the best," said Fenner.

It's actually considered the major league of marching band.

"(It's) a really strong tradition of excellence in performance and excellence in execution. I'm just proud to be part of the organization," said Carson Vanduch.

500 high school students audition for the prestigious group. 150 are selected.

"This is probably the coolest thing I've done in my life, just being part of the Madison Scouts," said Fenner.

This summer the Madison Scouts will tour 30 cities for eight weeks. At $3,000 per person these teens need some extra cash.

"Williams and Ree are friends with my parents, so it was really gracious of them to come out and I'm really happy they could make it," said Vanduch.

On this night, Williams and Ree are helping Vanduch raise some money for his spot on the Scouts.

"When we started grooming young Carson he immediately adopted to it. He's got feel. He can play anything. He really can play anything. We want to get him on the road with us, but we're afraid he's gone past us," Terry Ree.

Jokes aside, Vanduch and Fenner take their summer plans very seriously.

"It's really an honor. I'm excited," said Vanduch.
