Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

But, if you plan to fly, you better have already bought your ticket.

KSFY News spoke with a travel agent about when to buy tickets.

Her biggest piece of advice was to book early.

She said over the past 15 years flights have become more competitive and gotten better.

But you still need to buy your tickets well in advance.

"if you're planning on going somewhere over February or March next year you need to be planning it now," said AAA travel agent Kay Parrott.

As if traveling wasn't stressful enough.

"It is easy, but you have to plan far in advance," she added.

Parrott said in order to get good flights out of Sioux Falls Regional Airport you need to be looking early.

"What we're finding is that a lot of people are traveling and the airlines have cut back on both the number of flights that they're operating and on the size of the planes that they're using,"

We asked you if you have issues finding flights out of Sioux Falls, a lot of you said you drive to Omaha or Minneapolis to get the best deals.

But Parrott said that's not always the best option, "We've got some very competitive fares that it doesn't justify, especially if it's just one person or two people that are traveling, that it doesn't really justify driving all the way down there with the cost of gas the way it is now days."

Parrott added if you're flying out east, that may be a good idea because Sioux Falls doesn't have the competition going there yet.
So flights out of bigger cities will be cheaper.

And if you're waiting for the airline to release those cheap tickets just before the flight, "It used to be years ago, you could wait and get some last minute deals and things like that. Those last minute deals just don't happen anymore, not in the market that we're in," Parrott explained.

She said you need to start planning almost a year in advance to really get the best prices.

"I've got people planning for Christmas already. And they're not too early. We're actually having trouble finding seats for Christmas travel already," she continued.

Parrott said if Sioux Falls gets more airlines to fly here, the more competitive the prices will be.

Because it will be airlines competing for passengers instead of passengers competing for seats.
