Tortoise runs away from home, only makes it half a mile

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — After an 80-pound tortoise ran away from home in Rio Rancho, it ended up a half mile away.

Spike’s owners said he’s fast for a turtle.

"He was on a path it seemed like, it seemed like he was going somewhere," said neighbor Steve McCarty.

Some workers in Spike's yard accidentally left a gate partially open recently. Spike saw a small window of opportunity and made a run for it -- at a tortoise pace, of course.

The tortoise’s owner never thought it would travel so far and was devastated when she came home and Spike was gone.

Many neighbors saw Spike as he was out on his adventure.

"He was wandering down the road, happy as a clam. In New Mexico you see a lot of unusual things," said McCarty.

About two hours later, Animal Control picked up the tortoise.
