Tea bond vote recount yields same results

Posted: Updated:
Another setback for the Tea Area School District. Last week's bond vote to build an addition to the elementary school failed by a very slim margin.

And Wednesday, a recount yielded the same result.

There were 1,522 votes total -- 912 yes's and 610 no's. 914 votes were needed for the bond vote to pass.

The recount board started counting votes at 3 p.m. and finished around 4:30.

The recount board was made up of three people -- two appointed by the school's district business manager. One was from the 'yes' side -- Deb Svanda and one person from the no side -- Lynn Deyoung. The third person was mutually agreed upon  by the two sides -- Katie Knutson.

Stacks of 25 ballots were counted at a time by Knutson as Deyoung and Svanda tallied the votes. One ballot was questioned by Svanda who didn't think the 'no' circle was completely filled in. Because there were no markings in the 'yes' circle, the recount board decided the voter's intent was to vote no and the vote stood.

Svanda said she wanted the recount for peace of mind since the vote was so close.

"It's heartbreaking . We came within 1.1 ballots cast . We did what we had to do and unfortunately it didn't come out in our favor and we weren't expecting it but we had to do the recount just for that reason since it was so close," said Svanda.

The school district's business manager said according to the Secretary of State, the results of this recount are final unless a lawsuit is filed.
