SD panel rejects petition on trapping rules

Posted: Updated:
The Game, Fish and Parks Commission has rejected a petition from departed outdoorsman and trappers' rights champion Brian Reynolds.

Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday by teleconference to maintain the rules disputed in Reynolds' petition.

One contested rule requires trappers to remove snares and traps by May 1 annually. Another requires the removal of all traps from public land by May 1 each year.

Reynolds monitored statutes and instigated change before he died May 9 in Monroe. His petition claims that the Commission does not have the authority to make the rules in question. It states that the rules obstruct trappers' ability to do their jobs.

Game, Fish and Parks officials say the rules in question were adopted according to current laws and procedure. They recommended that the commission keep the rules.
