Don Meyer funeral expected to draw thousands

"We have a statue of Don that will be just inside the entry when people arrive, so they will be greeted by Don in a sense," NSU University Relations Director, Greg Smith said. All week long staff at Northern State University have been setting up the Barnett Center in the best way possible to honor Coach Don Meyer's life.

"We're trying to transform the Barnett Center into a place of honor for Don Meyer. Just to recognize him and the contributions he has been to the community and to the University," Smith said.

Meyer was a coach who finished his career with 923 wins. He impacted several while coaching on the sidelines, but his perseverance through all the hardships life threw at him, inspired everyone, not just basketball fans.
"I'm getting phone calls from British Columbia, and New York City, and Florida and everywhere in between," Smith said

Several seats have been set up because a large number of people are expected to attend the funeral. For people worried about parking, there will be enough available.

"The nice thing is school's out, so all of the students have vacated campus. The Barnett Center parking lot is wide open, and we'll fill that up first. The Johnson Fine Arts Center is available to us. The Jerde Hall parking lot across the street is available. It's supposed to be a nice day tomorrow so people could walk from there pretty easily," Smith said.

The service will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday with doors opening at 2 p.m. NSU staff recommends getting there early because they are expecting up to 6,000 people to attend.
