Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer busy season for businesses

Posted: Updated:
Many of us will be hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend. And with the beautiful weather -- some will  be making their way to our state's more than 50 state parks.

But it's not just the parks that will be seeing record numbers this holiday weekend.

Once Memorial Day weekend hits, there's no down time at the Battle Creek Steak House right off Lake Vermillion -- just ask Chef Mike Puliafico.

"If I live through the weekend -- extremely busy, extremely busy," said Chef Puliafico.

Chef Puliafico is on his feet from sun up to sun down.
"Kind of like getting stuck on a video game that just keeps playing and playing and playing and won't give you a break. We're juggling 50 balls in the air and trying to keep them all up and going," said Chef Puliafico.

But it's no surprise people are making their way to Lake Vermillion -- the view is  beautiful!

A lot of preparation goes into gearing up for the summer busy season. Chef Puliafico calls the winter season the calm before the storm.
"Locals are our bread and butter. Seasons kind of like the gravy, it's where we make most of our money," said Chef Puliafico.

And it's not just South Dakotans who are making their way to Lake Vermillion.

"I do meet people who haven't been here before. I meet people from Australia, from England, from India," said Chef Puliafico.

Although it's go, go, go from here on out out -- Chef Puliafico says at the end of the day, it's all worth of it.

"I enjoy being busy. I enjoy people enjoying my food," said Chef Puliafico.

Just across the lake from Battle Creek Steak House, camping at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is all booked for the holiday weekend.
