Brookings man taken into custody after stand off

Posted: Updated:
A 30-year-old Brookings man was taken into custody this morning after an hours-long standoff with police.

Brookings Police responded to a report of gunshots fired just after 5:16 Monday morning at the Westview Estates. Police were told the man had fired a handgun and was also in possession of a high-powered rifle.

Brookings Special Response team and police negotiators were sent to the scene. After attempting to make contact with the subject, the tactical team used gas to draw the man out of his home. Brookings Police Chief says the man was still uncooperative and aggressive towards the officers, so police fired less-lethal impact rounds at the suspect.

The man has been taken into custody and is currently being evaluated at the Brookings Hospital. He is being charged with discharging a fire arm and possessing a firearm while intoxicated. Other charges may follow as the investigation is on-going.

Police say no one was injured other than minor injury to the suspect. The suspect was alone at the residence as his two room mates were not home at the time he was taken into custody.
