Back in Black promotion supporting dark-colored pets

Posted: Updated:
According to national statistics, pets in black often wait longer than their lighter-colored counterparts to get adopted.

For the month of May, the Heartland Humane Society in Yankton is partnering with friends to launch 'Back in Black', a national campaign dedicated to increasing awareness and adoptions of black cats and dogs.

In May, a Back in Black special-rate of 50% off all black cats and dogs will be offered at Heartland Humane Society.

"This is a great opportunity to recognize this campaign, but also reduce your adoption cost to help black cats and dogs find a happy new home," said Kerry Schmidt, Executive Director for HHS. The shelter currently has eight pets in black that qualify for the special-rate. They range in age three months to ten years.

The adoption event is part of Best Friends Animal Society's national mission of No More Homeless PetsĀ®, which aims to end the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. Heartland Humane Society is a participating member of the No More Homeless PetsĀ® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society, and offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.

All cats and dogs available for adoption can be found on the shelter's webpage ( or stop by the shelter at 3400 East Highway 50 in Yankton.
