Plankinton all too familiar with school fires

Posted: Updated:
What's next? This is the question for the small town of Hoven. 13 years ago, this same question was being asked about Plankinton. In 2000 their school was also burnt down. They decided to rebuild.

It was a propane explosion that destroyed the whole school.

"I remember this loud noise. It sounded like a door closing upstairs. About 30 seconds later the pagers started going off, with the news of the school explosion," Chris Hill said. Chris was a senior when the explosion occurred.

Just like in Plankinton, Hoven's school is also a complete loss.

"We had to get all new books, pencils, and folders. Everything you need in a basic classroom we had to get," Hill said. In Hoven they will have to do the same. Hoven's school officials say they do plan to rebuild. People in Plankinton say that if Hoven plans to rebuild, make sure to make it big enough.

"We were about 180 students, now we are about 280 students. Don't underestimate the potential that could come of it. I know it's a tragic event, but think of the bright side and the positives this could bring to a community," former school board member Ed Fett said.

"The main thing that they have going for them, is that this took place during the summer. When this happened to us we still had to worry about school and getting everything ready. For them, I would make sure to take your time and figure out what your plan should be going forward," Hill said.
