Sioux Falls veterans group puts support behind indoor pool

Posted: Updated:
A veterans group once opposed to an indoor pool at Sioux Falls' Spellerberg Park does a backstroke.

Veterans for the VA, a South Dakota Political Action Committee dedicated to veterans’ issues, announced Friday that it supports construction of an indoor aquatic center at Spellerberg Park. The group initially supported keeping an outdoor pool at the city park.

“The Veterans for the VA organization is grateful the City’s plans have taken into consideration how the new indoor aquatic center may impact veterans. The proposed therapy pool within the indoor aquatic center has tremendous potential for Sioux Falls residents and veterans alike,” said Tom Muenster, Chairman of Veterans for the VA.

The group also plans to donate $5,000 for the therapy pool at the future Spellerberg Indoor Aquatic Center. The funds also could be used for signage or landscaping improvements to remind aquatic center patrons that parking at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center next-door is only for VA purposes. Veterans for the VA will continue to solicit donations from the community in support of the indoor aquatic center project.

“We appreciate this organization’s support and financial contributions for this exciting project,” says Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation. “This public indoor facility really will be for the entire community—children, seniors, veterans, and more.”

The City plans to break ground on the facility in spring 2015, with grand opening in fall 2016.
