SoDak Stories: Viborg's Lund Theater better than ever

Step right up, sit back, and prepare to be entertained.

Today's feature is Rio 2 - an animated film about the wilds of the Amazon. Watching Rio 2, here at the Lund Theater in Viborg didn't seem possible three years ago. Susan Kessler, the theater's owner for 30 years, was looking to sell.

After a nearly two and a half year effort, the community came together, raising $150,000 in a capital campaign and securing various financial gifts and sponsorships.

"It made it a lot easier to walk away from it because if we would have had to just lock the doors that would have been a really tough decision to make," said Kessler.

The theater's screen is new, it's Dolbe sound system is too. Its brick and mortar also required significant work.

"There was a lot of work put into this by scores of people who gave of their time and materials and they're money, of course," said Glenn Petersen the President of the Lund Theater Association.

And, now it's paying off.

"Having an attraction like this in a small town makes it a place to come, makes us a destination," said Petersen.

People from surrounding communities are lining up for buttery popcorn, happy to travel just down the road to Viborg to catch a flick.

"It's kind of fun to come to a small town and spend money where it will kind of stay local and see people on Main Street," said Aaron Skinner, a movie theater patron from Parker.

"Regionally we're the only one left and it's very critical to our Main Street and to our economy," said Petersen.

The Lund's marquee will get a facelift next and the exterior will be painted soon. For the man who has spearheaded this effort his smile shows just how proud he is to bring a piece of Hollywood to Viborg.

"My vision for the Lund Theater has always been that when people come to Viborg they'll not only say 'look they have a theater' but they say 'look at that theater'."
