SD panel to hear comments on deer tag reductions

Posted: Updated:
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission will hear public responses today on proposals to drastically reduce the number of deer tags for hunters this year.

The total number of tags proposed for the East River deer season is down by about 40 percent. West River tags will be down 56 percent. Officials say the decrease is to combat a shrinking herd caused by harsh winters, disease and habitat loss.

Supporters who commented in advance say they want to preserve the herd for future generations. But some commenters say the deer population remains high in parts of the state.

The commission will finalize the deer proposals at their meeting in Yankton at Lewis and Clark Resort.
