Vandals targeting Sioux Falls parks

Posted: Updated:

It is one of the oldest city-sponsored recreation programs in the city of Sioux Falls.

Since 1944, this program has helped kids and parents get through the tough schedule of summertime.

Well now, this program has a bit of a tough problem of its own.

Michael Gross is the owner of Lacey's Rental.

Part of what his business specializes in is providing porta potties to whoever might need them. "I found this porta potty like this, completely tipped over....they're very heavy porta potties too."

His company provides porta potties to the City of Sioux Falls' Supervised Playground Program;

Parents can drop off kids at select playgrounds and high school aged kids will watch them so mom and dad can get some things done. "We put two feet re-bars in each corner, that way they're able to be staked down and the wind can't take them over."

Lately what Michael Gross has been working to get done is fix all the porta potties that are being vandalized: This one tipped over at JFK Elementary....it was there for the supervised playground program, which Susie Garry oversees. "It is troublesome when these things occur. We obviously would encourage people to call our office when they see something."

In increasing numbers, people are reporting porta potties being tipped, dented and otherwise vandalized. "Our goal is to provide a quality program and quality services to the citizens and this happens. This is not new. It happens on occasion and each year there is some type of new thing that goes on."

This year what's going on is making a lot more work for Michael Gross and Lacey's Rental.

As he again works to make right what someone else decided to do wrong. "It's a shame that a very small, small percentage in the wonderful city of Sioux Falls is disrespecting them."

If you see any of this vandalism happening, call Sioux Falls Police...and they can hopefully help put a stop to this.
