Political analyst talks Bosworth's "desperate strategy"

Posted: Updated:

Former US Senate Candidate Annette Bosworth is one again speaking out about her arrest earlier this week – and the 12 counts of election fraud charges filed against her.

Today, Bosworth held a news conference at her medical practice in Sioux Falls, saying the charges against her are part of Attorney General Marty Jackley’s personal vendetta.

“This isn’t the first time Marty Jackley has tried to take away my medical license,” she said. “About three years ago he started an unsuccessful campaign of law against me. Marty Jackley’s goal is not justice, it’s revenge.”

Jackley released a statement this evening, saying “Mrs. Bosworth’s actions and public admissions on her petitions speak for themselves. Despite her beliefs, the medical board determines licensure issues, and the Legislature sets the election rules to ensure the integrity of our elections.”

But the question remains: Why is Annette Bosworth continuing this fight in the media?

Retired political science professor Bob Burns says it’s possible Bosworth is anticipating a jury trial, trying to mold public opinion in her favor.

Since her arrest, Bosworth has told the media several times she does not believe she's done anything wrong. But instead of swaying jury opinion, Burns says the constant media appearances could backfire.

“The possible error of all of this, is it just keeps the issue in the evening news much longer than it would be if she would just try to expedite the administration of justice,” Burns said. But he does understand some of her actions.

“I can understand that a desperate strategy may be needed at this time in order to avoid a felony conviction.”

Jackley did say it’s important to note that charges have been filed against two candidates in this case. When asked how this could be a personal vendetta since Former US Senate Candidate Clayton Walker is also being charged, Bosworth did not answer.
