Cheese factory hopes to ship to China

Posted: Updated:
A South Dakota Cheese Factory is undergoing a 20 million dollar project to help production of something new. Valley Queen Cheese Factory in Milbank is going to start producing 80% whey protein. "There's lots of domestic demand for it, but for the economic growth that is going along there. It's a real fit for us to look at China as an opportunity," Valley Queen CEO Mark Leddy said.

In China there is a demand for whey protein."For China the primary use is going into infant formula, as a protein source in infant formula. As the Chinese have relaxed their one child policy, and as the country modernizes, infant formula growth and demand is very strong," Leddy said.

Last month a representative from Valley Queen Cheese Factory headed over to China to try and form relationships with potential clients. He said it is a work in progress.

"You know certainly you'd like to go over there and have several people sign contracts when you are over there, but one thing we did learn is that it's a relationship building process. The customers over there really wanted to get to know us, learn about our company, learn about who we were. They really wanted some follow up before they commit to anything," Valley Queen Cheese Factory Vice President, Jason Mischel said.

When construction is done at the end of summer, workers tell me they should be able to make about one million pounds of 80% whey protein per month. They are hoping a lot of that will be shipping to China.
