Rapid Speedway back on track for 2014 racing season

Posted: Updated:
Race fans were louder than ever Friday night at the Rapid Speedway season opener in Rock Rapids.

It was just in May when the speedway canceled its 2014 racing season, citing the high cost of fire and rescue services at the track each week.

But the Lyon County Fair Board stepped in and brought racing back to Rock Rapids.

"We brought back racing because we didn't want racing to end at our fair grounds and our fair. If it ended this year, we'd never get it back. All the cars would go somewhere else to race. We were looking at a lot of debt that we didn't have money to cover. The people started donating in to get it going. They put the pressure on us to make us react that way," said Steven Campbell, Lyon County Fair Board.

Dereck Vanderbrink is the new Rapid Speedway manager. He says nothing but good has come with the change.
"It's all local -- local fair boards, local people and you got way more contacts. I can make a phone call to my friend that's a business owner or whatever and it's so much easier," said Vanderbrink.

The stands were packed for opening night. Race fans say they are relived Rapid Speedway is open -- some even calling it their home away from home.

"This is where we all come. This is where we love to be and racing is something that's in our blood. It's not just a sport. It's something we do on the weekend. It's part of who we are," said Jessica Schuldt.

The Rapid Speedway has a strong history in the town. Campbell assure us it will also have a strong future.

"One way or another, there's going to be racing down here at the Lyon County Fair Grounds. There will be," said Campbell.
