RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker (KWAY'-kur) has named Lt. Elias Diaz as the city's new police chief.

If the City Council confirms the appointment, Diaz will assume his new duties on June 16. He'll replace Steve Allender, who recently retired after three decades in law enforcement.

Diaz has been with the Rapid City force since 1998, serving in various capacities. Kooiker says he has a "wealth of experience." He also holds bachelor's and master's degrees from The Masters College in Santa Clarita, California.

As police chief, Diaz would oversee a staff of 153 full-0time employees, including 119 officers.
