Annual Repair Affair kicks off Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
Some Sioux Falls homeowners are in for a treat this Tuesday. The 21st annual Home Builders Repair Affair Day begins. This is a day where members of all skill levels donate their time to help people in need of home renovations. The volunteers are all within the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire.

There will be over 60 volunteers making repairs on 8 different homes, 7 in Sioux Falls and 1 in Brandon. The volunteers will do repairs for homeowners in need of accessibility issues, such as building wheelchair ramps, adding hand rails, decks, replacing a tub with a walk-in shower and installing grab bars. All work is done for free, and thanks to the large amount of volunteers, every project will be finished in less than a day.

The homeowners must be either 65 years of age or older or have a permanent disability. There also are income guidelines. The applicants had to have their application submitted in April. Homeowner Beverly Boehms will get a wheelchair ramp. Her husband is in need of one, "we are so thankful for this kind gesture," Boehms said.

Local contractors are assigned to every project. Brian Berg of N-Drywall and Construction is the contractor for the job in Brandon. He says it is an important day. "It's a way for the contractors to give back to the public. We take one day out of our busy schedules of the year, and give back to the public," Berg said.

Since 1993, the Home Builders Association has repaired over 175 homes with the help of over 1,000 volunteers putting in over 4,500 man hours.
