Students, residents evacuated due to gas line fire in Dell Rapids

Posted: Updated:
A gas line fire in Dell Rapids is out after causing an evacuation of nearby students and residents.

The fire started Tuesday morning on N. State Avenue in Dell Rapids. City Administrator Justin Weiland says no injuries have been reported. Weiland says the line is operated by MidAmerican Energy and the company has isolated it.

Minnehaha County Emergency Manager Lynn DeYoung says as of 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, the fire was put out. DeYoung also says the city closed off the surrounding area within a two-block radius. Students were present at nearby St. Mary's School at the time of the fire; they were evacuated to a nearby field. Several nearby residents were also evacuated from their homes.

Weiland says initial reports indicate that a contractor working in the area hit the pipe, but it's still unclear how the fire started. A car nearby also caught on fire, but that blaze has been extinguished.
