Stalled car sparked Dell Rapids gas line fire

Posted: Updated:
Investigators say a stalled car is to blame for the spark that ignited a gas line leak in Dell Rapids.

The fire started Tuesday morning after a subcontractor hired by GoldenWest Communications accidentally caused a leak in a MidAmerican gas line while performing maintenance in Dell Rapids.

A car owned by a nearby resident stalled in the area of the gas leak. When the driver attempted to restart the car, the gas ignited. The car became completely engulfed in flames.

The driver suffered only minor burns, but the car was completely destroyed.

The fire continued until Tuesday afternoon; emergency officials evacuated nearby residents from their homes as a precaution. Nobody else was injured in the fire, and no other property was damaged.

Captain Paul Niedringhaus of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office says it's very fortunate nobody was seriously hurt in the incident.

Dell Rapids City Administrator Justin Weiland says everyone affected by the leak has their gas service back. Weiland also said the city's volunteer fire department performed excellently in controlling the fire.
