Humane Society undergoing needed renovations

Posted: Updated:

It's a busy season at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society as the facility is undergoing some much-needed renovations which will be complete later this summer.

Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinator Malorie Adamson told KSFY News the $1.8 million project will help the shelter fit and care for nearly 200 more animals.

One of the spots for expansion is the  receiving area for overnight public drop-off of strays or unwanted pets. The amount of kennels will go from 4 to 16 once the renovations are complete.

The cold weather has hindered the project as machines don't run properly when it's well below zero. However, now that the weather has warmed up, crews are back at it and leaders hoping to have a ribbon cutting and open house by August.

Not only are money donations always welcome, but the shelter is in need of volunteers, dog walkers and pet food year 'round.
