President & First Lady arrive in North Dakota

Posted: Updated:
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Bismarck, North Dakota Friday afternoon.

The couple is heading to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation for the President's first visit to Indian Country.

Residents of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation that straddles the border between North Dakota and South Dakota say they're honored President Barack Obama will visit Friday - but they also want to see results on issues he promised years ago to address.

Obama's trip marks his first to Indian Country as president and only the third by a sitting president in almost 80 years.

Locals say they hope to show him their traditions at their ceremonial pow wow grounds. But they also hope he sees their issues: the lack of adequate housing, health care and education, among others, that plague the reservation and other parts of Indian Country.

Obama has said he wants to hear firsthand about challenges Native Americans face and plans to announce initiatives to help Indian economies.
