Canton residence help others recover from flood

Posted: Updated:
In Canton, South Dakota nearly 9 inches of rain fell Monday afternoon and early evening, flooding most of the town.

Some visitors and locals became stranded in Canton due to flooded roads.

On the outskirts of town, what is typically a creek has now become what looks like a lake. The flooded creek swallowed up construction equipment, corn fields and swept away the foundation of a railroad track.

Tuesday morning many residents faced the task of removing water that filled their basements Monday night. This water was mixed with raw sewage making it a nasty clean up task.

“My parents and my sisters and my siblings all went to their friends houses to get sump pumps in there and get it all pumped out. The sewage was backing up in there, so it was really gross," Elizabeth Woods said.

Fortunately despite the major flooding there have been no reports of injuries.

Since the initial flood, Canton residents say the flood waters have gone done about 5 feet since Monday evening, however it will still be a long time before water levels are back to normal.
