Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad tours flooding in Rock Valley

Posted: Updated:
Neighbors in Rock Valley, Iowa are dealing with extensive damage after recent flooding.

The man-made berms constructed over the past two days have held overnight and the river has begun to recede. But there's still significant damage.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad was in town Wednesday to survey the destruction.

Those in Rock Valley say they are in dire need of help. With Gov. Branstad's tour of the flood damage, they hope he can provide the relief they so desperately need to move forward.

"We don't know when this is going to end. There's more rain for the next three nights. When it's all over, I'm hoping that they're quick about assessing the damage and forget about insurance and get whatever help people need," said Pat Kosters, Rock Valley, Iowa.

The state will determine just how great the damages are.

"The state resources include helping with the cleanup and also we provide matching money to work with the local government in terms of some of the cost involved and we're hopeful we can also get the federal disaster declaration and get FEMA resources as well," said Gov. Branstad.

"There's a lot of disaster in Rock Valley here and people that lived in trailers that are all damaged and I'm sure they have always helped people and I really count on him that he will help Rock Valley too," said Donna Tilstra, Rock Valley, Iowa.

For a city of 3,400, everyone in the community has come together in this time of devastation.

"And this is personal -- really brings it home. People are good people," said Kosters.

Gov. Branstad says the way the Rock Valley community has pulled together -- filling thousands of sand bags -- has just been remarkable.
