Tornado touches down in Wessington Springs

Only one person was hurt in Wessington Springs Wednesday night, according to Jerauld County State's Attorney Dedrich Koch.  He tells us 11 or 12 homes were damaged in the tornado.  Some of them are likely destroyed.  Three businesses were destroyed: Springs Auto, Prairie Lounge and Hideout Lounge.

Three farmsteads near Wessington Springs also received damage.  1 person was trapped in a rural home.  They have non-life threatening injuries.  All residents from Wessington Springs are accounted for.

A tornado was spotted Wednesday night in the Wessington Springs area of South Dakota, where people were reported trapped.

"We know there has been damage and we know that it is significant. At this point, emergency personnel are in route to the city to offer help," Tony Venhuizen, a spokesman for Gov. Dennis Daugaard, told CNN.

JoAnn Hettinger, director of patient care at Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital in south-central South Dakota, said her facility has received one patient, but is preparing for the worst.

"We've heard people are trapped in their homes here in town. Search and rescue are out trying to help law enforcement," she said.

"It really is all still happening right now. The tornado hit across the street from the hospital -- really just one block away -- and there is stuff and debris everywhere."

Several tornadoes have reportedly touched down in northeastern South Dakota – including one that went through Wessington Springs.

The Jerauld County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a tornado touched down in the city of Wessington Springs.

 A woman at the 1905 Opera House in Wessington Springs told us the Hideout Bar & Grill, the Prairie Lounge, and multiple homes were leveled by the tornado.

Tornado warnings remain in effect for several counties through 8:45 p.m.
