SD man sentenced for threatening shooting

Posted: Updated:

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - A Yankton man charged for threatening to shoot up a school in a message on Twitter has been sentenced to one year of probation.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan reports that 23-year-old Travis Potts was arrested in May after law enforcement was notified of two tweets Potts posted in April.

He pleaded not guilty to two counts of making terroristic threats. Under a plea agreement, he changed his plea to a lesser charge of obstructing.

Yankton Police Chief Brian Paulsen had said that one tweet stated that Potts intended to "shoot up" a school and set it on fire. Another tweet said Potts wanted to "set a toddler on fire."

Conditions of his probation include a mental evaluation and that he not loiter around schools.
