Only one person was hurt after a tornado ripped through the town of Wessington Springs Wednesday night.
The tornado hit the small central South Dakota town of about 950 around 8:00 p.m.
Jerauld County State's Attorney Dedrich Koch says at least 23 houses were made unlivable by the storm. In addition, three businesses were destroyed, including Springs Auto, Prairie Lounge American Legion and the Hideout Lounge.
Three farmsteads near Wessington Springs also received damage. One person was temporarily trapped in a rural home. That person received non-life threatening injuries. All residents from Wessington Springs are accounted for, according to the Jerauld County Sheriff's Office.
Governor Dennis Daugaard toured the damage Thursday morning. He says he ordered 100 soldiers with the National Guard to help with recover and cleanup efforts. The American Red Cross also has several volunteers on hand to help.
The governor has asked people to stay out of the area because travel is too dangerous. Deputies have closed off much of the area.
Confirmed tornadoes also touched down nearby, outside the towns of Woonsocket and Alpena.
State officials are still assessing the scope of the damage as of Thursday morning.
