The mayor of Wessington Springs and the Jerauld County Sheriff have been putting on a brave face during this time of devastation. Neighbors are looking to them for guidance along the road to recovery.
But it’s just as difficult for these leaders to see their hometown in ruins.
“You have a professional job – you have to save and protect the lives of the citizens of Wessington Springs,” Sheriff Jason Weber said. “But there’s an emotional side to the devastation.”
No one was seriously injured in last night’s tornado, but the damage was significant for the small town.
Forty-three houses were damaged – 23 of those cannot be repaired. And five businesses were completely leveled in the storm.
